Orthographic Projection of a Chair
Objective
To learn basic visualization techniques and concepts for product design.
Project - View the Videos and drawing objects
Watch each of these videos and summarize their key points in your sketchbooks. Be prepared to provide the brief summary and discuss in class. As you work through these videos, please note that there is a specific drawing assignment for each one. Watch the video and then do the drawing assignment that goes with it. Then move on to the next video. Submit the drawings as a single project in a photo gallery on your website. Save your original drawings in a folder or portfolio. Please use a separate sheet of 8.5x11" printer paper for your work.
Drawing Assignment #1: The Object
- Find an object that is not too complex and draw it as accurately as you can.
- Try to fill in the majority of the frame (the page).
- Use a light pencil line to "rough in" your object.
- Refine as needed.
- Ink over the finished lines and erase the light pencil lines.
- Title the drawing and underneath it print your name and the date.
- Scan your drawing at 300dpi and upload to your portfolio.
Drawing Assignment #2: Orthographic Projection
Select a different object.
Draw it in orthographic projection (top, front and side view). Follow the format used in the video.
Try to capture the important details of the object.
Use the same techniques of light pencil line, then ink over the lines you want to keep.
Title, sign and date.
Scan at 300 dpi and upload
Drawing Assignment #3 : Cross section
- Use the same object as in the previous assignment.
- Imagine that the is a slice down through the approximate center of the object (this can be from any number of viewpoints).
- Use the same drawing techniques as before.
- Title, sign and date.
- Upload.
Drawing Assignment #4: Perspective Blocks
- Draw 6 blocks in 2 point perspective. You will first need to draw the horizon line and 2 vanishing points. You will need a metal straight edge and tape to secure your paper to the desk top. (please see me for additional instruction).
- Draw the first block in the lower center area of your paper and the other five
- on either side and at different heights.
- Use the same technique of light pencil guide lines followed by inking of the edges of the blocks - erase the pencil lines.
- Label, sign and date.
- Upload.
Drawing Assignment #5: Object in Perspective
Select an object, (Find something that you can breakdown into the basic shapes of blocks and cylinders.
Use the same drawing techniques as before.
Scan and upload to your e-portfolio, attach original drawings to your sketchbook.
